What child support payments can cover

Last week we spoke about child support enforcement in the state of California. This week, we will take a step back and look at what child support payments can be used for. Despite what many people believe, child support payments can extend well beyond that of just the basic necessities of food, shelter and clothing.

As we have spoken about in the past, one of the primary focuses of the courts is to make certain that, during and following a divorce, the best interests of the child or children are given prime consideration. This philosophy extends into child support.

While it may seem obvious that child support payments can be used for health and medical expenses, it is still worth noting the extent to which they can be used. They may include all expenses related to a child's health from doctor's visits and copays, hospitalization costs, insurance costs, prescriptions, over-the-counter medicine and supplies, dentist and oral visits as well as eye care such as glasses or contact lenses.

Child support payments can also be used to maintain a child's happiness and education. Payments can be used to help pay for educational costs including books, supplies, tutoring and additional courses as well as extra-curricular activities such as club fees, field trips, sports equipment and musical instruments and lessons. It can also cover entertainment costs such as toys and games, trips to the movies or amusement parks and even costs for vacations.

As you can see, there is a wide range of items that child support payments can be used for, each of which provides value to a child's well-being and happiness. If you are having an issue with child support payments or if you are a non-custodial parent and believe that your payments are not being properly used, you might find it useful to reach out to a lawyer for advice on how to proceed.
