Large alimony payments continue for actor John Cleese

California entertainment fans may be interested in information revealed in a recent interview with actor/comedian John Cleese. The actor opened up about his marriage and divorce, and how much the alimony settlement is costing him.

John Cleese, who became famous for his work with the television and movie comedy troupe "Monty Python", recently toured as a one-man show, which he called "The Alimony Tour." According to the interview, the title wasn't far off the mark. Cleese estimates that his divorce from his third wife will cost, in total, approximately $23 million in spousal support payments. According to reports, the 2009 divorce settlement required the actor to pay his ex-wife a lump sum of $13 million in cash and other assets. Following that initial payment, Cleese has to pay nearly $1 million in spousal support each year until 2016.

The couple was married for 16 years before divorcing and had no children together. While his ex-wife is a psychotherapist, it is unclear whether she actively practiced during the marriage. The actor says that he was forced to sell four of his five real estate properties in order to afford the alimony payments. He believes that many people are mistaken in their views of actors and miss the financial obligations that many of them face. The 74-year-old Cleese married his fourth wife in 2012.

The divorce process can encompass many conflicts regarding the division of marital property and spousal support. An attorney with experience in handling divorce legal issues may be helpful in helping a client negotiate an agreement that covers these and other matters, thereby obviating the need for a court order.
